How the Court Dimensions and Playing Surface Develop Quick Thinking and Intelligent Movement
The reduced playing area with futsal increases the need for skill, cognitive development and quick-thinking. It's equivalent to playing 37 v 37 in traditional football terms. Futsal players must feel comfortable receiving the ball in tight spaces, knowing they need not panic.
The hard surface futsal is played on increases the speed of the game to 7x that of football. This requires intelligence, speed of thought, awareness of surroundings and often thinking 2-3 steps ahead.
Decision-making, concentration and teamwork are critical at all times in and out of possession. Teams maintain possession of the ball by offering safe passing lines - which requires continual movement or ‘rotations’.
Futsal players learn to protect the ball by shielding it with their body as well as developing their awareness of ‘safe space’ and ‘dangerous space’ opportunities to create overloads (2v1 or 3v2 situations).
On an individual level all of the above, this develops the thinking of players at an accelerated rate to football. The number of variables involved and the speed with which ‘the picture’ changes are on a vastly advanced level.
Each decision must be made with an awareness of, and in response to, fellow teammates as well as opposition players.
